THE JOURNAL OF THE SOCIALIST SPIRIT
ONE DOLLAR A YEAR. TEN CENTS A COPY
184 WILLIAM STREET
New York, Sept. 29/01
Dear Mr. Markham,
Mr. LeGallienne disappointed us on his poem for THE COMRADE at the last moment, and we were compelled to use your poem in its place. The journal has already been considerably delayed, and we had to rush it through, so I hope you will forgive us for not sending you a proof. The first issue is just printed; you will get a copy in a day or two. I am not altogether pleased with it, and am sorry the first page design was not a stronger one. There are many other points, too, that will stand improvement, but we did the best we could, considering all the obstacles we had to contend with, and we shall do better.
Enclosed is $10 for your poem. I wish we could make it more.
Yours sincerely,
[Leonard D. Abbott.]
