Dear Mr. Markham,
A new monthly magazine is about to be born. Henry Knight Miller and Arthur H. Howland are behind it, and I am helping them to get it out. It is to be a magazine of social radicalism, and is to be called "The Square Dealer: A Champion of Justice and the People's Rights." The first issue will be published in August, dated September. We shall publish in this first number articles on Prohibition, the Passaic strike, the Sacco-Vanzetti case. We shall try to get articles from Samuel Untermyer (on free speech), from Judge Lindsey (on "the revolt of modern youth"), etc., etc. Dr. Miller has written an article on Arthur Nash.
We want a key-note poem from you for the first issue. I remember how, twenty-five years ago, you wrote for me a stirring poem, "The Love of Comrades," for the first issue of "The Comrade," and I feel confident of your continuing comradeship and good-will.
This poem would be paid for at least at the "Psychology" rates, but is not to be reckoned in terms of mere money.
We want your cooperation and suggestions. I hope that you can call in some day soon.
With affectionate greeting to you and Mrs. Markham, I am,
Sincerely yours,
[Leonard D. Abbott]
