June 6/07.
Mr. Edward Markham,
Westerleigh, S.I.,
New York City
Esteemed Friend and Fellow Worker: I am sending you under separate cover a copy of Oklahoma’s New Constitution which I hope will meet with your approval. I have heard that the Boston critic sy[sic] of it that it is one hundred years ahead of the civilization in which we live. I wish you would peruse carefully the marked copy and write comments for our press outlining your ideas in regard to the effect the child labor; compulsory education, mine mill and factory inspection; fellow servant bill; 8- hour law and state commissioner of charities measures will have toward producing a better environment thereby giving place to a higher type of men: What effect these preventative measures will have in eliminating sweat shops and slums. The value of children to the state consequently the value of those laws which we have enacted to protect them from the encroachments of capital and greed etc. etc. The corporations and carpet baggers and licquor[sic] interests are fighting for their lives and it is going to be a battle royal between the forces of evil and the forces of good. Join us. I am asking for like expressions from all the worlds great minds even writing to people across the sea and I expect to build up a great public sentiment in this way. I am making an exhibit at Jamestown showing the work done to secure child labor in the constitution. I will be at the National Association of Charities and Corrections next week at Minneapolis as a delegate from Oklahoma. The governor here has asked me to go and extend a cordial invitation to those great people to come down here next year and let their light shine in Oklahoma. Will you be there. I sincerely hope so as I have had an abiding interest in you and a great desire to meet you since receiving your letters and manuscript last year.
With best wishes, I am,
Sincerely and gratefully,
Kate Barnard
