Dear Sir:
Permit me to thank you from the depths of a grateful heart for the brave and awe-inspiring sentiments contained in your poem, “The Man With the Hoe.” It is like nothing else that has even been written; it is entirely unique and stands alone in literature, a triumph in originality and the grandest monument to genius and humanity that man has ever reared to himself or his time. The world is indebted to you for one of the greatest poems of this or any other age. It is the expression of a great soul. The brain that fails to have set in motion its thinking power, after reading such an array of glorious truths about inglorious conditions, is merely so much inane matter that might for all purposes as well be something else; the heart that fails to beat responsive to the never-ending oppression of the poor, dumb creature, is merely a pump suspended in an inhuman breast. My enthusiasm raised me from my chair the first time I heard it. It stirred depths that nothing in writing had ever reached before. My brother, Eugene Debs very appropriately wove it into his address at Delmonico’s before the Nineteenth Century Club, a short time ago. It made such a deep impression upon him, that after two or three readings it was his, without the use of a printed copy.
