Abbott writes to Markham about Clara von Ende Liebmann and her creation of a School of Music in New York's East Side. Abbott describes the lessons, the cost and the pupils at the school. Abbott explains Liebmann's family history as well. Abbott tells Markham how a few prominent names have been helping Liebmann and requests a meeting between Liebmann and Markham.

Dear Mr. Markham,
I am very anxious to have you meet Clara von Ende Liebmann, of whose work you have possibly already heard. Her father, Heinrich von Ende, was a German aristocrat who turned Socialist, came to this country, and died, after a life of sacrifice and privation. Her mother, Mrs. Von Ende, is the literary critic of the New York “Staats Zeitung,” and has done most valuable work in interpreting Maeterlinck, Ibsen, Whitman, etc.
Mrs. Liebmann has great musical gifts. She turned from a bitterly unhappy personal life to service among the poor. She established a school of music at Clinton(?) Hall, in the heart of the East Side, and is giving musical lessons at the nominal sum of ten cents a lesson. She started the school with all the money she possessed, and was at first single-handed. She has now five or six rooms, a corps of teachers, and two or three hundred pupils.
On Sunday afternoons concerts and lectures are given at ten cents admission. Three or four hundred people turned out the other afternoon to hear beautiful cello and violin solos, and a paper by Mrs. Von Ende, on Gorky(?).
J.G. Phelps Stokes, Kellogg Durland, Ernest Crosby and a number of others are helping Mrs. Liebmann. I want her to meet you, and talk over her project with you. Could she call late Saturday afternoon, or, if not then, what day would be convenient?
