Mr. Edwin Markham,
West New Brighton, N.Y.
CONFIDENTIAL
Dear Mr. Markham:-
Your opinion as a literary man would be very welcome to me on an educational matter which I have evolved. It is needless to say Mr. Markham, that I am asking your opinion independent of our connection in the above Society, whose interests are closer to my heart than any personal interests that I may have, and to which I have consecrated my life and efforts. Therefore if you find that you cannot freely give me a favorable opinion regarding my educational plan, I will just as well appreciate one if it be adverse to my personal interests. As you know, the average newspaper is a great medium for good or evil with its readers. The better newspapers are beginning to realize that its readers must be instructed rather than amused, and along this channel I have evolved an educational plan which will consist of a daily five to ten minute reading course on various subjects of arts and sciences etc. My idea is to have these articles ably written, but in an understandable manner that the layman can easily comprehend. Such a plan has never been systematically used, and I have spoken to a few educators who tell me that it is excellent and timely, and would prove very beneficial to the newspaper reading public.
