Premier of Russia
Dear and Honored Comrade:
The heart of the world is thrilling with the hopes of a Free Russia. We look to regenerated Russia to be the leader of the advancing Democracy of the world; so we feel that in her fate is involved the fate of a free humanity. The conscripts of freedom in all lands rejoice in the fact that your hand is on the lever of Russian destiny. They know your courage; they believe in your wisdom, they confide in your devotion. May all good powers defend and befriend you in these hours so big with fate, in these hours that are placing your name with the names of Washington and Mazzini and with all the heroic servants of mankind. When the envoys of your Government were in New York City a few weeks ago, one of your representatives suggested that I send to you my poem on Russia, a poem that I read at the celebration in Madison Square Garden. It now happens that a campatriot of yours is leaving America on her way to Russia, and I am sending the poem by her hand. This poem, called “Russia, Arise”, was written by me ten years ago. It was translated into your language and sent to Russia, where it was read to a multitude upon the streets of one of your great cities. The reader was immediately arrested for this treason and sent to prison for eighteen months. I also venture to send you my first volume of poems, the one containing “The Man with the Hoe” a poem that has been translated into all languages. I hope that you will find that this poem breathes the spirit that is at the heart of the Russian Revolution.
