Edwin Markham,
Landing, N.J.
Dear Comrade.—
Under separate cover we are mailing you a copy of the last edition of my “Songs of Socialism” I trust that you may find this work interesting and quite an improvement upon the previous editions. I want to call your special attention to song #52, “Brotherhood”. I sincerely hope you will enjoy this new musical dress to your most beautiful poem. I think it is one of the best I have so far written. Comrade Carr asked me to write a new tune for your poem. For this edition. I wrote one which he positively rejected as not equal to the high standing of the poem. I then wrote the present tune, and he accepted it as worthy of the song. Referring to it in a letter just received, Comrade Carr says, --“I am greatly pleased with ‘Brotherhood’ now…What a sweet, glorious song it is”! I trust you will also enjoy the inspiring “Song of the New Rebellion”, words by Rose Pastor Stokes, music by myself, (#47), and the new music to Morris’ splendid “No Master” (#49), and Kingsley’s grand “The Day of the Lord is at Hand” (#65). If you are pleased with this effort, I should be glad to have you write me some more real good songs and I will try and see what I can do in the way of the Music.
Fraternally,
Harvey P. Moyer
